GRIDWORK SANS
Gridwork Sans is a display modular typography inspired by protest topographies and the architecture of modern day Basque cities. Its design showcases the contrast between the shapes of modern and old buildings present in Basque cities in order to represent the conflict between local communities and the negative effects of globalization and gentrification of neighbourhoods.
The process began by translating the architectural contrast between the historic, typical buildings found in Basque cities and the harsh, sanitized lines of modern architecture into a geometric grid. This grid served as a framework for developing a typography where every letter represents the struggle of local communities against globalization. This conflict is visually captured through the sharp contrast between organic, curved lines and clean, rigid geometries.
