THE COLOURFUL TASTE OF MEXICO
The creative process began by exploring diverse layout options through quick digital sketches and thumbnail compositions. Once the final frames were established, each illustration was painted by hand using gouache over high-grade watercolor paper.
To capture the rich essence of Mexican cuisine, I experimented with various mixed-media techniques to replicate the contrasting textures of the dishes, artisanal plates, and traditional textile backgrounds. The intricate embroidery textures were achieved by meticulously drawing each thread using an ink pen charged with diluted paint, requiring a high level of patience and precision. For the culinary elements, some sauces were given depth using a sponge or by creating organic spatters—shaking the brush to drop fine droplets onto the paper. Additionally, harsher, more rustic textures for the pottery and backgrounds were crafted using dry-brush techniques and masking tape for defined edges.
